Apixaban is a direct factor Xa (FXa) inhibitor that is used to prevent blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation (AF), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is also used to treat DVT and PE.

Indications for Apixaban

• Reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation.
• Prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) leading to pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients after a hip or knee replacement surgery.
• Treatment of DVT and PE to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Mechanism of action of Apixaban

Apixaban works by blocking the action of factor Xa, a protein that plays a key role in the blood clotting cascade. By blocking factor Xa, Apixaban prevents the formation of blood clots.

Apixaban is a highly selective inhibitor of factor Xa, meaning that it has little effect on other proteins in the blood clotting cascade.
