When OA from the intestine is transported via the portal vein to the liver in humans, the circulating amount of OA could be largely limited by its renal excretion. Furthermore, the uptake of circulating OA by human erythrocytes, and its return to the blood as uridine, may generally keep orotate at a very low concentration in serum
